  • Caption: HERMES is a data transmission network of the European railways. Its creation was suggested by the UIC in 1975. The first studies on HERMES began in October 1977. The network was organized by six founding railways - BR (England), CFF (Switzerland), DB (West Germany), FS (Italy), SNCB (Belgium) et SNCF (France) - at the beginning of the 1980s. HERMES was operated the 1st January 1985 with the very first exchanges of information between CFF, DB and SNCF.

    HERMES is used to exchange messages connected with passenger reservations, freight and train functioning.

    The railways wishing to join HERMES in 1990 are : NSB (Norway), DR (East Germany), ÖBB (Austria), MAV (Hungary), JZ (Yougoslavie). The railways using HERMES are under the patronage of the UIC.
